Möðrudalur is the highest town in Iceland, 469 meters above sea level. The town is located on the highland north of Vatnajökull.>
In Möðrudalur is a small cozy church that was built by the local farmer Jón Stefánsson in memory of his wife and he also painted the altar table in his own special style. His son Stefán Jónsson, Stórval, later made the famous garden with his pictures of Herðubreið. The art is still alive in the descendants of Jón the farmer and pictures of Íris Lind adorn the best rooms of Fjalladýrð.
Several walking trails are available in the area and you can get a map at the information center. There is also a movie that shows snapshots of the eruption in Holuhraun 2014. From Möðrudalur is a short drive to many unspoiled natural pearls such as Herðubreiðarlindir, Askja, Kverkfjöll, Hvannalindir, Jökuldalsheiði Stuðlagil and Stórurð.
