The first mountain hut of the Icelandic Touring Association was built on a hill above Tjarná river in Hvítárnes. The hut stands at an elevation of 425 meters above sea level and was completed in 1930. The hut has two floors; on the lower floor there are two bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room, and on the upper floor there is a sleeping loft and a small bedroom. There is a gas stove and a small fireplace. There are no toilet facilities in the hut. The water cistern is in a separate building. From Hvítárnes there is a beautiful view in all directions, over Hvítárvatn lake and to Langjökull glacier. From there, one can start a hike along the ancient Kjalvegur trail.
